Pitt Lake - Feb 2007

  • Starting the Hike and Enjoying the day

A beautiful flat walk that can be a loop, or an out-and-back.  Runners are fine, though there are muddy places on the loop route.  There are two lookouts along the way, plus another one on a trail that runs along the side of the mountain but that trail has been closed for the last couple of years due to fallen trees and washed out foot bridges.  We highly recommend staying on the dike road, where it's safer ... and sunnier!!
  • Becoming part of the wildlife

Each time we go, we usually see trumpeter swans, geese, ducks, seals, eagles, and amazing mountain vistas.  There are canoe rentals from March to November and picnic tables.  The otter appearance was a bonus.  The dike is often battered by high winds and it's cold out there!!  A wonderful side trip is to rent a canoe and paddle up Widgeon Creek.  An hour's paddle brings you to a gravel beach with great picnic potential and an outhouse.  Adventurous trekkers can beach their canoes there, and hike north for another hour or so, through amazing rain forest to "Upper Falls.

  • The reason for the hike

The best way to get to Pitt Lake from Vancouver, is to turn left from Lougheed Hwy onto Dewdney Trunk road immediately after the Pitt Lake Bridge and follow the signs.  The road passes several other hiking areas ... all on the tops of the many dikes that have allowed farming to flourish.  Great for running!!
